Lesson 10.6 David Sinned and was Restored

Lesson 10.6
David Sinned and was Restored
2 Samuel 11:1 - 12:14; Psalms 51

This week are going to learn about God’s unending forgiveness that David experienced and we can too because of Jesus. David sinned against God by taking Bathsheba away from Uriah and having Uriah killed in combat, but when God sent Nathan to confront him about his sin, David repented and God forgave him. David’s sin came with a price though, as sin always does.

In the same way, we can receive God’s forgiveness too because God sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sin. Jesus died the death we deserve so that we could be made right with God.

Help your kids understand that sin is serious and that God has not promised to spare us from its consequences. At the same time, point out the love, mercy, and grace of God that we experience because of Jesus and how in Jesus we have been completely forgiven of all our sin.

Lesson 10.5 God made a covenant with David

Lesson 10.5
God Made Covenant with David
2 Samuel 7

We continue the big story of the Bible this week with David recognizing that he was living in a wood-paneled palace while the ark was still in a tent. David wanted to build a temple for God, but God did not want David to build it. Instead, God told David that his son would build the temple, but He made a covenant with David and promised that every future king of Israel would come from David’s family.

God kept His promise by sending His Son, Jesus, to be one of David’s descendants. Jesus is our King who will never die; He will rule over God’s people forever.

Help your kids see that God’s promise to David to provide Jesus can be traced all the way back to God’s promise to Adam and Eve and Abraham in Genesis. Remind them that God had promised from the beginning that He was going to provide a Rescuer to break the power of sin and death and that the Rescuer is Jesus.

Lesson 10.4 David and Jonathan Became Friends

Lesson 10.4
David and Jonathan Became Friends
1 Samuel 18:1-12; 19:1-10; 20:1-42

This week we will continue to trace David’s rise to replace Saul as king. David’s victory over Goliath brought David great fame and adoration in Israel. Saul had brought David into his court, but in time, Saul became intensely jealous of David and even tried to kill him.

Meanwhile, David and Saul’s son Jonathan became true friends. Even though Jonathan was next in line to be king after Saul, he recognized and accepted that God had chosen David instead. David and Jonathan’s friendship points to an even greater friendship—our friendship with Jesus. Jesus calls us friends (John 15:15), and he showed His love by dying to save us from sin.

Help your kids see Jesus is our King and He is our friend also.

Lesson 10.3 David was Anointed and Fought Goliath

Lesson 10.3 David was Anointed
and Fought Goliath
1 Samuel 16-17
As we continue our journey through the big story of the Bible this week, we come to God anointing David to replace Saul as king and David’s victory over the giant Goliath. While Saul looked the part to be king, David didn’t look like a strong warrior and seemed to be no match for the Philistine champion. But God gave David power and he defeated Goliath.

God used this victory to position David as the next king and also to show us a picture of Jesus. When Jesus came to earth, He didn’t look like a strong warrior either. But Jesus showed His power when He died on the cross and rose again to defeat death.

Help your kids see the connection between David and Jesus. Talk about how God defeated Israel’s enemy of Goliath and our greater enemy of sin and death. Guide your kids to see that David doesn’t primarily teach us to be brave, but to trust in Jesus instead.

Lesson 10.2 God Rejected Saul as King

Lesson 10.2 God Rejected Saul as King
1 Samuel 13:1-14; 14:18-48; 15:1-35
Last week, we saw how Israel demanded a human king to rule over them. God’s intention was to provide the perfect King for His people in Jesus, so He warned Israel about the problems they would face if they chose a human king instead. The people did not heed God’s warning, and God gave them Saul to be their king.

This week, we will see that God’s warnings about a human king began to come true with Saul. Saul looked just like the kind of king that the people wanted, but he sinned when he tried to offer a sacrifice that only the priest was allowed to give. Because of this, God rejected Saul as king.

Help your kids understand that Jesus is our perfect King and that we can trust and follow Him completely. Talk with them about our need to obey God completely and that we should do so because of our love for Him.

Lesson 10.1 Israel Demanded a King

Lesson 10.1 Israel Demanded a King

This week, we will reach an important juncture in the big story of the Bible. The people of Israel had been led by a series of judges, but now they looked around and saw how the other nations had kings, so they too wanted a king. So the people went to the last judge, the prophet Samuel and demanded a king. Samuel resisted, but God told him to do as the people asked. However, God told Samuel to warn the people about the consequences of having a king.

Samuel tried to warn the people that a king would place a heavy burden on them. He would take young men to fight in wars. He would tax the people. He would make them work hard. But the people refused to listen so God appointed a man named Saul to be Israel’s king. From a human perspective, Saul was the perfect choice, but as we will see next week, he was far from being the perfect king God had in mind.

Help your kids understand that Jesus is our King and that He is the perfect, wise, and loving King. Encourage your kids to follow Jesus as the absolute leader of their lives.

Lesson 9.6 Eli and Samuel

Lesson 9.6
God Judges His People: Eli and Boy Samuel
1 Samuel 1-3

This week we wrap up our study of the Old Testament judges by studying Samuel. Samuel was called by God as a boy to tell Eli and the people of Israel about God’s plan.

Samuel used God’s words to tell the people what God is like. John 1:1 says that Jesus is the Word. Jesus showed the world what God is like, and He told people to turn away from their sin. Jesus ultimately freed people from the power of sin by dying on the cross and rising again.

Help your kids connect Samuel using God’s words to tell others about what God is like and Jesus, the Word of God, showing the world perfectly what God is like because He is God.

Lesson 9.5 Ruth and Boaz

Lesson 9.5
God Judges His People: Ruth and Boaz
Ruth 1-4

This week we will look at the story of Ruth and Boaz that took place during the time of the judges. God provided Boaz to take care of Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi when they were in need. God sent Jesus to earth through Ruth’s family.

Boaz was a family redeemer. That means he would help his close relatives who were in trouble. Boaz cared for Ruth and Naomi because their husbands had died. In a similar way, Jesus is our Redeemer. We need help because we sin. Jesus bought our salvation for us by taking our punishment when He died on the cross.

Help your children see the picture of Jesus redeeming us through His payment on the cross.

Lesson 9.4 - Samson

Lesson 9.4 God Judges His People
Samson
Judges 13-16

This week we come to Samson in our study of the Old Testament judges. God gave Samson great strength, but Samson was very weak when it came to being faithful to God. Samson’s sin led to his death, but God used his death to defeat the Philistines and deliver the Israelites from their enemy.

Samson’s story reminds us of Jesus. Jesus never sinned, but God sent Him to die on the cross and rise again to rescue believers from sin and give them eternal life.

Help your children see that Samson offers us a contrasting picture of Jesus. Like Samson, Jesus’ death was used to deliver God’s people, only Jesus did not die because of a sin He committed. Jesus died because of our sin.

Lesson 9.3 Gideon

Lesson 9.3
God Judges His People: Gideon
Judges 6-8

This week, we continue examining the judges of the Old Testament with Gideon. Gideon was an unlikely judge. When God called him, he was afraid and was unsure if he could be used by God. God proved to Gideon, and the Israelites, that He is strong enough and that He is the One Israel should depend on.

The Israelites cried out to God because they knew they could not save themselves. Even Gideon was not enough to save them; God used Gideon to save His people, but God fought the battle for them. The people needed someone who was mighty to save. Jesus Christ came to save us from sin because we cannot save ourselves. Only God, through Christ, can save us.

Help your kids see that God uses our weaknesses for His glory.

Lesson 9.2- God Judges His People - Deborah and Barak

Lesson 9.2 Deborah and Barak
Judges 4-5
This week we continue our study of the judges as we work through the Old Testament. When God’s people were distressed by Canaan, they cried out for a judge and God sent them a judge named Deborah. Deborah obeyed God and instructed Barak to fight Israel’s enemy. With the help of a woman named Jael, Israel won the victory.

God does what is for His glory and our good. (Psalm 115:3; Romans 8:28) God fought for the Israelites and used Deborah, Barak, and Jael to defeat Canaan. In a similar way, God uses people and events to not only save us from our enemies, but to bring about our ultimate good: salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Help your children see that God uses people to bring about His perfect plan.

Lesson 9.1- The First Judges

Lesson 9.1

The First Judges
Judges 3: 7-31

This week we begin studying the Old Testament judges. After Joshua died, the people were left without a leader and began to sin against God. God disciplined them and when the people cried out for deliverance, God sent a leader called a judge to rescue them. Later, when that judge died, the people sinned again and the pattern was repeated.

The judges saved the people from the consequences of their sin, but not the cause of it. God’s plan was to one day send a true Deliverer—Jesus, His own Son—to be the King of His people. Jesus saves people from sin forever.

Help your kids see that all of the judges were imperfect humans and they could not rescue God’s people from the cause of their sin, just the consequences.
